The photographs were made in the Doukhobor communities in the southern interior of British Columbia situated between Grand Forks and Nelson and up into the Slocan Valley, over a period of seven years, between 1973 and 1979. Their basic rhythm derives from a deep sense of loss and shared memory of a shattered experiment in collective living.
